For this project, Precision MicroFab welded plastic for a cell phone display. To create this lap weld, we used an infrared laser and some specialized fixturing to transmit through a clear plastic window to the underlying plastic frame.
We were able to achieve a nice melt pool where the black plastic absorbed the infrared laser and fused to the clear plastic window. The melt pool was approximately 300 μm wide.
As with all proper welds, this seam weld was stronger than the material itself.
