At Precision MicroFab, we’re on the cutting edge of what’s possible in terms of micro-manufacturing and fabrication. Sometimes things go awry. Here are some examples:
500 μm triangular divots
For this project, we were trying to create round dimple patterns with a micro-mill. We ended up with triangles.
We’re not sure how this happened, and we don’t think we could do it again if we needed to, so please don’t ask us.
Fused silica
Fused silica is not always the best choice for your micro-manufacturing application. It has poor absorption and material interaction with our deep UV lasers.
The center image shows a mask projection of a demagnified square aperture with increasing power density. The bottom image shows a channel cut in silica with the UV laser. Notice the high degree of chipping and cracking.
